Tips to avoid AI Content scams

  • Educate your colleagues and family – Make sure others understand that AI can impersonate trusted people and processes
  • Watch for emotional manipulation – Scammers may use sob stories (e.g. hardship, illness, or “support my small business” narratives) alongside AI-generated content to build sympathy and pressure you to act
  • Question authenticity of products and creators – Be wary of accounts selling items that look inconsistent, overly polished, or don’t have verifiable history, reviews, or real customer interactions
  • Limit what you share online – Personal content can be used to train or enhance impersonation scams, make sure your social accounts are private and never post people without their permission, especially children
  • Pause and think critically – If something is designed to trigger urgency, sympathy, or guilt, take a step back and verify before engaging or sending money
  • Be cautious with voice or video requests – Don’t assume a call or video is genuine; AI can clone voices and faces convincingly
  • Use strong account security – Enable MFA and use unique passwords to reduce the impact of credential theft
  • Avoid clicking unexpected links or downloads – Even well-written messages can lead to phishing sites or malware
  • Verify identity through a second channel – If you receive an unusual or emotional request, confirm it using trusted contact details, not what’s provided in the message or content
